After exploring no less than 10 different environmental accreditation schemes over an 18-month period, Piroto has decided to join the Planet Mark scheme. It’s an important step forward on our journey to net zero and one that demonstrates our commitment to becoming a carbon neutral company.
This article explores what was behind that choice and what the decision ultimately means for our customers.
What is Planet Mark?
Planet Mark is an internationally recognised carbon reduction and net zero specialist with over 10 years of experience. Their aim is to help businesses like Piroto to find solutions to reduce carbon emissions and meet net zero targets.
As one of 10 global partners of the UN-backed Race to Zero campaign, Plant Mark’s process and mark is recognised by governments and businesses. Certification will help us continue our carbon emissions measurement journey by identifying what still needs to be measured. Completion of our carbon footprint will form a strong base from which to continue steps to reduce the impact our business has on the environment.
Why Piroto Chose Planet Mark?
The support that Planet Mark offers their members seemed relevant to our business. They mapped out a clear journey towards reaching our goal of becoming a carbon neutral business by the 2050, a date set by the UK Government. Planet Marks required target of 5% reduction in scope 1 & 2 emissions per year is challenging. That said, we believe that our membership and certification will ensure that we reach our goal and meet our responsibilities to the environment.
Since we have already started to measure our emissions, we wanted to work with a body that closely aligned with our own thinking on measurement and reduction. Importantly, Planet Mark’s business certification is based on credible measurement criteria. They follow the Green House Gas Protocol for Corporate Emission Reporting and use recognised carbon conversion formulae as provided by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).
Furthermore, Planet Mark operate independently from any carbon offsetting scheme thus giving us the opportunity to select projects that really resonate with our team and customers.
What Does Environmental Accreditation Means for Customer?
Commitment to Sustainability
By starting our sustainability project some five years ahead of the Governments required date (2030), we are demonstrating our commitment to reach net zero well within the required time scales.
Customers can rest assured that working with Piroto will contribute to their own Scope 3 emissions targets. Additionally, by seeking accreditation from a recognised body, we will reduce the burden on customers to undertake their own supplier audits.
Some specific areas we are working on include:
- Investing in up-to-date label printing technology to maintain efficient production processes
- Reducing chemical usage
- Introducing greener inks and adhesives
- Reducing energy usage and moving to green tariffs
- Limiting waste and ensuring we avoid waste going to landfill.
Assisting our customers on their own carbon neutral journeys
Alongside our own net zero journey, we are committed to helping customers reach their own sustainability goals. That means:
- Sourcing and testing the most environmentally friendly, high-performance label materials
- Testing thinner label backing papers to reduce label weight and therefore transport costs
- Ensuring the most efficient use of label materials to reduce waste
- Exploring innovative ways to streamline label and tag usage
- Reducing packaging and offering greener options.
